Soylent: Day 3

Posted on

Day 3 of Soylent and if I am being completely honest I am not doing well. Rob informed me on the discussion boards that my numbers were too low and I should up them and so this morning I re-mixed my Soylent. I just took what I mixed last night, dumped it back in the blender and added more oat powder (for the calories) and more fitness fiber (for, duh, the fiber). I think the fiber is helping because my restroom visits have been "better" but I still feel slightly sick to my stomach, gassy, and bloated. My roommate, Tyler, is feeling about the same. We are going to discuss changing the formula and/or only replacing some meals with food until we can get it fixed because I feel miserable. These were the exact feeling I was looking to avoid by eating Soylent.

I do want to make it clear that this is, of course, all my own doing. I really should have tweaked the recipe more upfront and done more research. I was just so excited about Soylent that after funding the campaign I couldn't wait. I found the clearest recipe online and ran with it which, in hindsight was not the best idea. I really wanted to go 2 weeks on just Soylent but right now I don't know if I can go 1 more hour. I'm hungry (even after boosting the oat powder) and I feel like shit. It's starting to affect my work as I am very agitated. I will update later with what we decide on but if I still feel like this around 5pm then I think I am going to have to get some real food.

Update 6-20-2013 8:52am

Yesterday I broke down and ate real food again. I'm really disappointed that I wasn't able to go 100% on Soylent but it's my fault for not more thoroughly researching my recipe before starting. Rob told me on the Soylent Discourse boards that I should drop the fitness fiber (the stuff I doubled up on yesterday) because I might be taking in too much which "is interfering with the rate of nutrient absorption". He suggested I take off a day or two to "recover" from a bad Soylent batch which I plan on doing. I ate dinner last night and breakfast this morning and plan on eating real food for at least all of today and probably tomorrow then I will try again without the fitness fiber and just increase my oat powder.

Another thing that Rob mentioned on the boards and in a blog post was to experiment with the taste more. I was just using the base ingredients and getting all the flavoring from the whey powder (French Vanilla), I was hesitant to add anything at first because I wanted to see if I would like the base taste. I can say after 2 days of only Soylent that I definitely need more flavoring or maybe I will rotate through a few flavors.

I look forward to starting Soylent again in a day or two with my recipe tweaked. I will post here and on the Soylent boards when I start back up. I jumped in the deep end the first time and about drowned so I think I am going to keep at least 1 real meal in my diet (per day) to start off and slowly transition to Soylent. Like I said on the boards: my eagerness to start experimenting with Soylent won out over good judgment it would seem. I would like to thank Rob for all of his help, it was really cool to get from the guy who started it all. Also thank you to the other people on the boards who gave feedback/support, you all are great!
